2000 BMW M5 Anthracite Metalic $10,500 Ames, IA

I am putting up this web page because quite a few people have asked for more info so instead of doling answers out to each person I am going to put everything I know all in one place.

After much deliberation I am selling my 2000 BMW E39 M5. Here is your chance to own one of the best cars ever made. If you are reading this you probably know what you are looking at. This is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a sleeper, a sedan with great handling and almost 400hp that can do a sub 5 sec 0-60.

My car is anthracite metallic with the black interior and has just about all of the factory options except the back-up sensors. It is a 6 speed manual with, the suede headliner, Moonroof, leather dash cover, Ski Pass thru, and even the factory badge delete option which takes off all of the external M badges (Stealthy).

Other non-factory options include: K40 concealed radar detector, Newer widescreen DVD NAV and BMW factory Bluetooth phone pairing.
The car has just over 150,000 miles. It’s seen both coasts and a lot of America in between. I have used only Mobile 1 oil since I bought her in ’06. The digital part of the dash (which used to be a known problem with these cars) was replaced by BMW in Des Moines and has no dead pixels. The clutch and the transmission replaced were a couple years ago at 120k. I also have the current clean carfax.

This car has served me very well and I would love to keep it. It is probably the best car I will ever own but we have decided that we have too many vehicles and the sedan just won’t do all the things we need. The car cost $72,000 on the sticker, now she can be yours for $10,500

CarFax Report ( I think owners 2-4 are the same guy. He's a dealer in Minniapolis)

This is where I am going to lift up the skirt and answer all of the questions I can:

The most asked question so far is Rust? It does have a couple spots of rust. There is some on the bottom corners of the front doors, a tad around the gas filler (has been fixed once under warantee) and some spots on the botom right of the trunk lid.

There are some small dents and door dings, the paint on the front of the hood has chips there are some scratches. I drive this car and I don't really baby it and rub it every day with a soft diaper. The car is in good shape I just don't want anyone to think its pristine. The price reflects that.

There are a couple small puntures in the seats.

This car has been worked on almost exclusivley at a local independant shop. (Campus Garage in Ames, Iowa) They have taken very good care of it as long as I have owned it. I have a great relationship and trust these guys. I thought I had sold the car recently to a local buyer but he backed out. In the process he asked me to take it to the Mini dealership (Willis) in Des Moines to get a "free" multi-point inspection. They did the inspection and found a number of items that they said needed attention immediately. I'm pretty sure they pay their "free" insection guy $7.50/hr and maybe a commission on what ever business he can drum up. After the buyer walked and I simmered down a bit I realized that one way ot the other I needed to get to the bottom of the red flags so I took my car to Campus Garage and we put it up on the lift to examine Willis' red flags. Technicaly except for the brakes and the wires in the fan (which they totally are wrong about) their conclusions had some basis they just didn't know/care enough to investigate fully. Here are the results we found documented with photos above:

They said the brakes were down to 3mm all the way around so we actually took the wheels off and measured (they didn't) and they are at 9mm. The rotors are scored a bit but not worn down.

They said the tires are worn They are right about that. I was planning on running them until I swapped out for snows this winter then they would probably need to be replaced in the spring.

They said the all 4 O2 sensors and the catalytic converters were cracked. The stupid thing about saying this is there were no codes being kicked out by the ODB2 which would be the first indication of a damaged o2 sensor they. We found no evidence of cracks in the catalytics. Pictured are cracks in the heat shields/strain reliefs on the sensors but there is no damage to the sensors themselves.

They Said there was a clunk in the front end. The inspector couldn't find where it was coming from (I think because he didn't look) and I hadn't noticed it. The guy who wanted to buy hadn't either but when we had it up in the air a passanger side sway bar bushing was worn. Part is on order and it will be replaced on Wednesday (Aug 6)

They claimed the power steering pump fluid was low (they were right about that) but talked to my buyer about replacing the pump. When we looked at it we found some oil around the original hose clamp which we cut off and replaced.

They said it has Valve cover leaks. This may be true we went in with a mirror and there was some evidence of oil. Nothing dripping but some area's that have colected oil and grime. The car doesn't use much oil but I add a bit (not even a quart) once in a while between changes.

They said that a sensor wire was in the fan. We found a bit of wire loom "near" the fan that was cracked but no evidence of anything being in or near the fan.
